Get your nest boxes ready!

It may be difficult to picture spring amid the March morning chill, yet Mountain Bluebirds will begin arriving in Southern Alberta as early as the first week of March.

Please do your part to ensure that your nest boxes are:

  • Clean and maintained - remove old nests; repair or replace damaged boxes.

  • Lid and floor in place - check that your nest box is ready for nesting.

  • Securely mounted - check mountings to prevent box shifting or damage.

  • Protected from predators - install or update predator guards to keep out unwanted visitors.

  • Properly vented and drained - clear any blockages in drainage or ventilation holes and make sure floors are secure.

By taking these steps now, you will help the returning males, who are quick to select nesting sites and call in potential mates.

Share your tips, photos, and experiences in the comments below or send them to us for inclusion on the website or in our Spring Newsletter.

Thank you for everything you do to support Mountain Bluebirds and protect their habitat. Warmer days are on the horizon—and with your help, our bluebirds will have a welcoming start to the season!
